The George 1 Repatriation Project Recovery Team comprised of core Greenland Expedition Society (GES) Team members will employ the unique technology and techniques developed during over 7 expeditions to recover the WWII P-38 Lightning now known as ‘Glacier Girl’ from 268 feet below the Greenland ice sheet surface.

The proven Greenland Expedition Society WWII P-38 Lightning recovery technology originated, developed and successfully operated by former Greenland Expedition Society Team under the leadership of Pat Epps and Richard Taylor provides the last remaining elements necessary to conduct the successful recovery of Ensign Max “Val” Lopez, Chief Petty Officer Wendell “Bud” Hendersin ARM1C and Chief Petty Officer Fred Williams AMM1C left in 62-year-old, 150-foot deep temporary Antarctic grave.

Greenland Expedition Society team leaders Pat Epps and Richard Taylor will lend their wealth of expertise - gained from their leadership of P-38 Lightning Glacier Girl exploratory and recovery expeditions - to the George 1 Repatriation Project's team leader, Lou Sapienza. Lou is a former 3-time Greenland Expedition Society team member originally selected by Epps and Taylor to participate in the recovery of Glacier Girl.  The same team members will engineer and manufacture a 4th generation “Super Gopher” to melt down to the 3 US Navy air crewmen.

Roy Schoffner, a Kentucky businessman and pilot, sponsored the 1992 Greenland Expedition Society mission that recovered “Glacier Girl.”  Mr. Schoffner ultimately took over ownership of Glacier Girl and performed one of the most spectacular WWII restorations under the guidance of project manager Bob Cardin.  Bob continues to oversee Glacier Girl’s operation and maintenance for its current owner, Rod Lewis.
